Looking for a Cheap Traffic Attorney?

I know the economy is making it hard on everyone, so it's no surprise more and more people are looking for a bargain.  Hey, I like a "good deal" just as much as the next guy.

I mean, seriously, who likes to overpay?

There's nothing worse than buying something and finding the exact same item for less somewhere else.  The key word in that sentence of course is the word "exact."  Most of the time, when people go looking for a bargain, it's easy enough to try and compare items because they are comparing products, not services.

When it comes to services, it's an entirely different ballgame altogether.  And when you're talking about attorneys, more specifically, traffic ticket attorneys, there's lots to compare.

So what are you supposed to do?  No problem, I've got you covered.

The first thing you have to realize is that, traffic ticket attorneys, like most professionals, offer a great range of prices and services.

When you go looking for a cheap traffic attorney, you really mean one who's not going to rip you off, right?  You certainly don't want to hire an attorney who may have no idea what he or she is doing, just because they are cheap?  By doing that, you run a great risk of paying more money by the end of the case.

Let's start with the basic premise that no attorney wants to lose money by taking on a case.  Therefore, the amount of time and effort an attorney plans to put into your case is going to affect the price he or she is going to charge.

When it comes to professional service providers, the expression "you get what you pay for" is often very true.

It is very important that when comparing fees between lawyers, that you know what you are comparing.  Most traffic ticket attorneys charge a lump sum as opposed to hourly.  Therefore, it should be easy to make a comparison on price.

But be mindful of the following:

Many attorneys who advertise a low price are either promoting the fact that they are new and are trying to learn their craft or they are low balling you to get started with them and they plan on adding "hidden" fees to bring your cost back up to a more normal level.  Again, remember, no one plans on losing money ahead of time.  Make sure you confirm in writing that there will be no more additional fees paid to the attorney.

The attorneys fee is only one part of the equation.  In fact, it's the easy part to calculate and compare.  It's the amount of money you are going to have to pay BEFORE your case goes to court.

But what about the amount you are going to have to pay AFTER the case goes to court???

What you ask?  "There's MORE money?  It doesn't end after paying the attorney to take the case?"

Well, the simple answer is . . . . it depends.

And here's where the desire to hire a cheap traffic attorney can come back to haunt you.

Sure, it was nice that the "cheap traffic attorney" that you found only charged you $39.00 to handle a speeding ticket.  You were willing to overlook the guy's lack of experience because hey, it was a great deal.  Much cheaper than everyone else.  How bad could this person screw up?  You've been to traffic court before, it didn't look that hard.

Well, let's assume your attorney actually shows up to court (I'm sorry to say, many of them don't and it causes their client's license to get suspended), and goes before the judge when your name gets called.

Because you paid so little, do you know if your attorney will make multiple court appearances to try and get the case dismissed (so you pay NOTHING additional) or just plea it out and take the court costs the judge hands down (usually in the $200 range)?  Sadly, this is one of the things I often see cheap traffic attorneys do.  It's one way to keep their costs down. They make one appearance and do everything possible to spend as little time on the case as they can.

Another scenario is that an inexperienced attorney tries to do a good job and as a result goes to court multiple times; but because of the lack of experience, doesn't really know how to get the case dismissed and as a result, you end up paying high court costs.

In both of those scenarios, have you really saved money by hiring a cheap traffic attorney?  Hardly.  In fact, it's probably cost you more money.

The important thing to keep in mind is that the difference between a "cheap" traffic attorney and an expensive traffic attorney is probably no more than $30-$40.  For that difference, you are risking having to pay an additional $150-$200 in court costs vs. having the case dismissed and paying nothing.

Another reason to try and find an attorney who is going to work harder to try and get your case dismissed is the affect a ticket can have on your driving record.  If a case is dismissed, it does not appear on your record.  What's that worth to you?

The truth is, no one bats 1000% and no one can see the future, but when it comes to something as important as your driving record, you should be seeking out the most qualified attorney who is going to do the best job for you.
