I know most of you think this article doesn't apply you. Your driver's license couldn't possibly be suspended . . . could it? Did you know there are hundreds of thousands of people right now with a suspended license and they have no idea? How could that be possible? Let me count the ways.
- You sent your insurance check in and it didn't get processed (happens all the time)
- You forgot to notify the DMV to change your address and you received one of those red light camera tickets, which was mailed to you, but you didn't get it.
- You made a payment to the clerk of court for a previous ticket and they either didn't get it or got it late and you never received the notice back
I can keep going, but there is a reason the state of Florida created a violation called "unknowingly driving with a suspended license." It is entirely possible you wouldn't know if your license is suspended.
So I ask you, "Do you know how to check if your license is suspended?"
Here's 3 ways:
- Contact your state's Department of Motor Vehicles
- Call your insurance company and have them check for you
- Call a local traffic attorney and have them check
I see it as part of my job to help people with all their traffic ticket problems, and if I can help someone avoid a problem (i.e. getting a ticket for driving on a suspended license), all the better.
Do yourself a favor and take the time to check your license. Those 30 seconds could save you a nice chunk of change and loads of aggravation. Plus, it will make you sound that much more convincing when you say "But officer, I REALLY didn't know my license was suspended."
